Poet Anne Sexton and painter Vincent van Gogh both suffered from clinical depression, both were renown for their creativity and both took their own lives as a result of mental illness. LANGUAGE BETWEEN ARTISTS Sexton (1981) clearly related to the anguish displayed in van Goghs Starry Night and understood the cathartic element of sharing such angst with a kindred spirit.
The time Sexton (1981) spent in and out of mental facilities and in a therapists office struggling to rid herself of emotional demons fortified her with an expressive outlet that
effectively bled much of her torment onto the pages of blank, white paper; as she wrote her interpretation of van Goghs imagery in Starry Night, she was able to achieve
momentary relief from the mental distress that consumed her being. "The town is silent. The night boils with eleven stars. Oh starry starry night! This is how
I want to die" (Sexton, 1981). Like Sexton (1981), van Gogh utilized art as a catharsis while entombed within a mental health facility by painting Starry Night. Struggling between
sanity and madness without the ability to gaze into the starry night from his insane asylum, he drew imagery from his memory as he brushed luminescent stars, crescent moon and
