elicit affair of Tristan and Isolde, but rather starts by relating the love story of Rivalin and Blancheflor, Tristans parents, whose tale is equally poignant. By first relating this background to the tale of Tristan an Isolde, Von Strassburg accomplishes several purposes. First of all, this tale sets the tone for what will follow, but it also establishes Tristan as a man of noble heritage, who is, in fact, the nephew of King Mark, the ruler of Cornwall and Isoldes husband, as his mother, Blancheflor, was the kings sister. Rivalin is a knight from Parmenie, a domain in Brittany, and he travels to Cornwall to join the court of King Mark as he is in search of experience and learning. He meets Blancheflor and they fall in love. However, Rivalin joins King Mark in defending his kingdom and is gravely wounded. When Blancheflor hears this news, she is distraught with grief. "A thousand times she beat with them (her hands) there and only there, there where she was troubled, above her heart--there the lovely girl struck many a blow" (Von Strassburg 56). Indeed, Von Strassburg relates that Blancheflor would have caused her own death and died of her sorrow if it were not for the hope of seeing Rivalin one last time. As this indicates, the love of Tristans parents is similar in intensity to that of Tristan and Isolde. As with the later ill-fated couple, it is taken for granted that either would rather die than live without the other. By picturing Tristans parents as noble, passionate people, the reader is prepared to see these qualities also expressed in Tristan.
