are also references to her home being in a "one horse town" and her boyfriend Tommy driving a "beat-up Chevy truck" (Yearwood). The refrain relates her fathers reaction to Katie
dating this boy, as he believes that Tommy "aint worth a lick" and that his intelligence is less than average, "When it comes to brains, he got the short end
of the stick" (Yearwood). However the refrain also focuses on Katies perspective, indicating that "Shes in love with the boy" and, no matter what they have to do, they will
someday marry (Yearwood). The next stanza portrays the love between Tommy and Katie progressing. It begins with them "Parked in the very last row" at the "drive-in movie," where
they are "holding on to one another," rather than watching the film (Yearwood). Afterwards, at the local Tastee-Freeze, Tommy gives Katie his high school ring, as this "will have to
do/Till I can buy a wedding band" (Yearwood). A refrain again brings up the point that Katies father is opposed to this union. Everything in the song thus far
has substantiated the setting as a rural town and Katie and Tommy as members of the rural working class. The drive-in movie, which has rapidly disappeared from urban settings, offers
the adolescents a cheap form of entertainment, as does the Tastee-Freeze afterwards. The song also invokes the ambience of youth and inexperience, as well as love, as Tommy uses his
