to this enormous museum, I found myself in awe not only from the spectacular visions of artistic beauty that covered its walls and filled its hallways, but also from how
markedly well I was able to both interpret and appreciate the value of various works based upon what I had learned in class. For prior to my actual visit
to the Met, my vision of classic art was limited to what I saw in textbooks or heard about between the solemn walls of college classrooms.
Of particular intrigue to me, were several of the works of ElGreco. In one particular painting, he effectively illustrates an attack on the city of Toledo. From
what I know and have learned, El Greco was not very fond of the autocratic rule of Spain by the church during the inquisition and apparently, such feelings were largely
evident in works such as this one. Essentially, in this portrayal of the city, Toledo does look much like a village under attack. The
combination of vivid historical realism complimented by his colorful and in some respects abstract ideas, prove to me that El Greco was definitely ahead of his time, and did not
fit the mold of others who painted during the Baroque period. Historically, Toledo was a center of inquisition activity and intolerance and in my opinion, ElGreco appropriately
depicts this by his contorted images of the citys buildings in what I determined to be a sort of pre-impressionistic mannerism. What appears to
be another chapter in the story of that particular work, is another artful painting by ElGreco entitled "Don Fernando Nino de Guevara" Factually, Guevara was the Cardinal of Toledo
