as a form of visual communication. In other words, Trimbur examines how, precisely, people go about using abstract symbols, i.e., language, to relay their own ideas, impressions, feeling, and messages
to others. Chapter 2 addresses the topic of traditional academic literacy, as Trimbur describes strategies that students can apply to the task of reading and analyzing texts critically and then
use the information they gain from reading to creating written analysis. Chapter 3 introduces the basic tools of rhetoric, i.e., ethos, pathos and logos. The author offers examples of rhetorical
analysis, not only from the academic world, but also from business, politics, and popular media. The second section of the book addresses the requirements of specific writing projects, such
as letter, memoirs, fact sheets, proposals, and so forth. Trimbur relates how both professional and non-professional writers have addressed each type of writing project. The way in which he has
organized each chapter is particularly effective because he seems to anticipate the readers questions as the chapter progresses and provides answers. Each chapter begins with a short introduction and
then proceeds to describe each genre in a straightforward manner that easy to follow and comprehend. This description includes descriptions of the appeal of a particular genre. For example, in
the chapter that addresses writing profiles of specific people, Trimbur writes, "This impulse to describe, to analyze, and to understand what people are all about seems to grow out of
genuine need to come to terms with our social experience and our relationships with others" (Trimbur 222). This comment is followed by several excellent examples of well-written profiles. At the
