authors do create a first novel that is somewhat autobiographical. It is simply something that writers happen to do. Fiction writers do tend to borrow from real life even though
their imaginations allow them to build new worlds and exciting situations. Conversely, writers of fiction who sometimes live in a dream world are able to write creative non-fiction prose. They
are able to bring creativity--through setting, word choices, ideas--to the mundane. They are sometimes driven to write certain things and write as if in catharsis. The creative urge at times
seems to come out of nowhere. That said, one can often tie the intimate--and sometimes secret-- life of writers, to their output. In their lives, writers do interesting things. Sometimes
they wait until the time is right in order to write something they have been thinking about. Others have written almost since birth. Amy Tan for example has noted that
books are what kept her sane throughout her tumultuous childhood ("Amy"). And while writers have different techniques and use things in their lives differently when they create their works, there
is a sense of sameness. They all use words. They all are trying to make a point. Sometimes the point is to just get the story out. In fact, many
novelists and short story writers are storytellers. They simply tell a story. That is all that they are expected to do. At the same time, they also to some extent
tell stories around their own lives. They tell stories about their parents and about things that happened to them. Flannery OConnor for example had focused on a grandmotherly figure while
