men, and between men and women. It is a very subtle story in many ways, urging the viewer, or reader, to really pay attention and read between the lines so to speak. With that in mind the following paper answers three particular questions posed by the student requesting this paper. Trifles The first question pertains to the conflict in the play. The student asks what the conflicts are, internal and external. The primary conflict is very external and obvious as it involves the investigation of a death, perhaps a murder, of a man. There are three men searching through the house for clues and the women/wives, two of them, who are simply there, it would seem, as meaningless entities. The conflict involves the men attempting to understand whether the man of this house was killed by someone other than the wife, and they surely cannot really seem to accept the fact that the simple wife could have killed her husband. The conflict, therefore, is uncovering the truth about the death of this man. The men, however, overlook many little details that the women seem to notice, details that are important or meaningful to women and all but non-existent to men. The women uncover the truth about the death, thus solving the conflict for themselves. The men, however, do not know the truth and the women will not tell them so for the men the conflict is only solved by seemingly accepting that someone, other than the wife, killed the man. The internal conflicts all revolve around the relationship between the men and the women for the men simply assume women just involve themselves with menial house chores and the women are ultimately the ones who are brighter, more attentive, and more logical in seeing the truth ...
