tradition. I do believe the characters statements accurately reflect their motivations. There is no reason to throw out a possible reason without a possible background. Its completely possible that people
scarred those of higher-ranking. If you look at other cultures that have mutilated the body to prove worth it is completely possible. For example, the women with multiple rings around
their necks showed rank. The longer a womans neck, the more rings, and the rings did not come cheap. Body decorations have been around forever. Tattooing has been around for
centuries and practiced in many forms. Why couldnt this just be another form? In regards to trying to find out if scarring is necessary to maintaining tradition, it is
always important to families and cultures to do so. This is not a new concept. The "darkies of Fifth Avenue" are those who "conformed" to Americanized beauty: where every blemish
makes a person ugly. The thinner the better. The "darkies" of Fifth Avenue have nothing to do with skin color. I think "darkies" refer to those who dont see outside
of their own scope of New York City. Dark means they can only see whats in front of them, and if something is not in front of them it is
