"Sharing Our Stories of Survival: Native Women Surviving Violence" is an excellent example of a resource that can be turned to to better understand the problem of domestic abuse as it affects Native Americans. Chapter 15 of this book is particularly helpful in allowing us to understand all of the factors that interplay in an abusive relationship involving Native American women. These factors are much the same as those that we see for non-Native women yet there are subtle differences as well. One of the most helpful aspects of this chapter is its emphasis on respecting a womans decision on how to deal with her relationship. While you as her counselor can certainly provide guidance and the support that she so desperately needs, ultimately this is her life and she must be allowed to make the decision on how she intends to live it. If there is anything to critique in Chapter 15 of "Sharing Our Stories of Survival: Native Women Surviving Violence", it is the authors portrayal of Native American communities as a whole as being unsympathetic to women that are suffering abuse. In my experience just the opposite has been the case. Although many Native American communities are admittedly moving away from their traditional ideological frameworks, their traditions are not ones that accepted abuse in any manifestation. Traditionally Native American women were, and are, important members of the community as a whole and there were severe retributions awaiting any man that treated his wife in an abusive way. Unfortunately, this Chapter 15 of "Sharing Our Stories of Survival: Native Women Surviving Violence" does not clarify that fact.
