In this case, looking at Management Information Systems (MIS) in schools, both qualitative and quantitative research methods have been used. A quantitative survey and a quantitative interview can
be compared to gain an in-depth result (Curwin and Slater, 2003). The survey reveals that the main use that MIS is linked
to administration, the most popular use being student assessment, followed by the allocation of resources. However, the views expressed in the interviews reveal a mixed level of commitment to
the system and the value it provides school. For some respondents the MIS is essential in the performance of their jobs, helping to maximise resources and increasing their efficiency.
For others, its use is more limited, constrained by the input information, but still able to be useful by providing real-time data, such as students attendance record.
The interviews reveal a general agreement that the system helps with forward planning when it is used correctly. This supports the survey results that
indicate its wide use, for administrative purposes. However, it also appears that the system is being underutilised due to the potential uses, identified in the interviews, and the relatively
low levels of utilisation in those areas. For example, only four members of staff indicated that they use the system to track truancy. In the interviews, all members
of staff responding agreed that the system could be useful here, but it was noted that the current system was paper-based and time-consuming. Surveys and the interviews both indicate
there is a greater potential for the system in this area. The interviews also demonstrated a general agreement that the system was useful
