particularly in respect to aggravated assault, there is an increase in criminal activity ("City of Sacramento: Police Department"). And while there is a need for change perhaps in crime prevention
such as programs to make sure that homes are well secured, there are other areas of concern too. For example, truancy had been a problem in Sacramento, but instead of
complaining about the problem, law enforcement took steps to resolve the issue. In Sacramento, a new idea had been to change the law so that all students of certain ages
would be subject to truancy statutes ("California: City weighs"). At the time, the law only concerned those students who were supposed to be in school and the rule did not
affect students who were, for example, suspended ("California: City weighs"). Clearly, a student who has been suspended from school is at risk for school failure. They might be the individuals
who are more prone to engaging in mischievous behavior. Hence, a change in the ordinance could help to curtail criminal activity, even when students may be absent for a valid
reason. Under the law, teens who are caught violating curfew would be served with steep fines and penalties ("California: City weighs"). This is one example of a program that works
in Sacramento and one that had been created to address a disturbing trend. Another trend is aligned with increasing crime, but the positive nature or outgrowth of this trend is
for community involvement. People want to protect their homes and perhaps the best way to do this is for average citizens to become involved. At the Sacramento Police Department site,
