of dyslexia; they used a working definition as follows: "Dyslexia is present when the automatization of word identification (reading) and/or word spelling does not develop or does so very incompletely
or with great difficulty"(Gersons-Wolfensberger & Ruijssenaars, 1997). This working definition means that dyslexia is characterized in practice by retardation in both reading and spelling that is severe enough to resist
the ordinary teaching methods and remedial efforts (1997). In other words, children with dyslexia who learn to read in the traditional classroom will have great difficulty. Like other disabilities,
dyslexia is covered under the ADA or the Americans with Disabilities Act. In the text of both civil rights legislation and special education legislation, learning disabilities had reached disability status
(Tomlan, 1996). In fact, in the interpretation of the Americans with Disabilities Act, examples of appropriate accommodations are for individuals with learning disabilities and have been used to illustrate key
concepts (1996). The ADA is important to a discussion on learning disabilities, as many critics believe that learning disabilities are over-diagnosed. Others contend that ADA is used as a tool
by either parents or students and sometimes, there is a class component. Worth (1999) claims that it is sometimes an "expression of class bias" and goes on to explain that
children are labeled LD when it is a surprise that they are poor performers. One can imagine that there are abuses within the system. Still, when a valid case of
dyslexia is apparent, what are the options for the student? To what resources is he or she entitled? ADA does mandate that accommodations be made and that available educational remedies
be administered. How is dyslexia treated? Just as there is no precise definition or test to diagnose the condition, there is no one remedy. Multiple approaches to reading
