controversy regarding the drug. All too often frustrated teachers urge parents to get their child diagnosed and secure a prescription from their pediatricians to tame the little monsters. Some parents have fought back, suggesting that the school system does things only to benefit itself and make the lives of the teachers easier, thinking nothing of the fate of the children. Today, however, there are alternatives. While nothing has been invented to replace medication, there are new ways of coping with ADD. A new and exciting self-monitoring technique has arisen and has the promise to make life easier for ADD kids. First, what is Attention Deficit Disorder? Calhoun, Greenwell-Iorillo & Chung (1997) explain that during the end of the 1960s, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) had become involved in the renaming of some disorders and in their 1968 DSM-II they named a syndrome, "hyperkinetic reaction of childhood" something that in the 1970s was called "hyperactivity" or "hyperkinesis" (Calhoun, Greenwell-Iorillo & Chung , 1997). They had been rather well known terms and by 1980, when the third, Diagnostic Statistical Manual hit the streets, the condition was dubbed "attention-deficit disorder" (ADD) as well as "Attention-deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADD-H) (Calhoun, Greenwell-Iorillo & Chung , 1997). Within six years time the name was changed again and is now well know by the acronym ADHD (Calhoun, Greenwell-Iorillo & Chung ,1997). While the names have changed, that does not mean that the disorder has. Nothing has really been changed in terms of comprehending the problem (Calhoun, Greenwell-Iorillo & Chung ,1997). Authors say: "ADHD is better defined as constant, spontaneous, uncontrollable, overt, purposeless behavior unconsciously displayed by children. After examining all of the new terms and classifications which have evolved over the years, the characteristics have remained unchanged since Ebaughs (1923) report" (p.244). ...
