Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration: one out of every eight people in this country currently has a significant problem with alcohol or drugs or both, 40 percent of
these people have a dual diagnosis related to a mental disorder; about 27 million Americans are either chronic drug users or define themselves as heavy drinkers; and about 12
percent of all children under the age of 18 use illicit drugs (Coaching International, 2010). About 70 percent of drug and/or alcohol abusers work and account for an overwhelming proportion
of absenteeism in the workplace. They also tend to have more accidents on the job and do not perform their jobs as well as others. This agency estimates that substance
abuse costs the society more than $250 billion (Coaching International, 2010). This is a very serious problem. Definitions Addiction is defined as a chronic condition that is characterized
by compulsive seeking of a drug and abuse of that drug. The drug may be alcohol, cocaine, heroine, marijuana, etc. The drug relieves the individuals distress by inducing pleasant states.
Chronic use changes the brain so that it craves the drug and its effects. Chronic use also raises the individuals tolerance of that drug as well as physical dependence (MedicineNet,
