that carries with it many considerations in regard to appropriate punishment and accountability. As is often the case when looking at a problematic issue it is advisable to turn
to the areas which apparently experience the most problems both to decipher the causes and to formulate and effective approach (Bohac, Evans, et al., 1996). Florida is one place
to turn to explore varied approaches to the nations juvenile justice problem. Florida has one of the most serious juvenile crime problems and quite possibly one of the
most effective juvenile justice programs (Bohac, Evans, et al., 1996). Florida is also perceived as one of the more likely states to try and sentence a juvenile as an
adult. It is, in fact, one of the fifteen states that currently allow prosecutors as opposed to judges to determine whether a child will be tried as an adult
(Skipp and Campo-Flores, 2003). It is important to note, of course, that Florida does not treat all of its juvenile offenders
as adults. Indeed, the state is one of the most progressive in the nation in terms of its varied approach to juvenile crime. Largely due to a problem
of overcrowding in Floridas juvenile correction facilities Florida has been forced to identify alternative means of handling juvenile delinquents (Bohac, Evans, et al., 1996). The well-remembered 1994 murder of
