accompany depression, then a vicious cycle is born. The more the patient looses sleep and has no appetite, the worse the overall problem becomes. As the prevalence of depression
appears to continue to grow, the response of doctors is changing as well. Doctors are now looking to treat depression both from a therapy point of view as well
as a pharmacological point. In other words, doctors will often combine therapy with medication in order to treat a patient. Many experts believe that "major depression is often both
chronic and recurrent" (Novel Chronic Depression, 2002). Generally, studies show that with major depression psychotherapy is less effective (Novel Chronic Depression, 2002). It appears that this type of
depressions needs to be treated with antidepressants as well as therapy (Novel Chronic Depression, 2002). The first step for the
doctor though, is to determine the nature of the depression and the severity. Mild to moderate depression has a far greater chance of being helped through therapy than does
moderate to major depression. One reason for this may be that major depression is a longer term condition whereas mild depression is usually shorter term and in response to
a specific even such as a death, divorce, or other life event. Major depression, on the other had, often has roots in a chemical imbalance in the brain and
