one set of symptoms, such as depression, might aggravate the other set of symptoms, making the overall disorder worse. For this reason, any simplistic approach to the matter of treating
bipolar disorder is likely to meet with failure. Such considerations are vitally important when dealing with children and adolescents with bipolar disorders as the early management of symptoms is critical
to healthy neuropsychological development. For this reason, it is useful to explore the question of what treatments have proven most effective in mitigating the destructive impact of bipolar disorder. This
paragraph helps the student establish the severity of the issue at hand. Bipolar disorder is a serious psychiatric disorder which cannot go untreated. Failure to apply adequate treatment can lead
to catastrophic results. For example, a 2009 study looked at 35 subjects who had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and then committed suicide; the mean age of the individuals was
roughly 40 years old, and the duration of illness was about twelve years (Keks, 2009). In this population, 11% had been treated with electroconvulsive therapy, 43% had been treated with
lithium, and 31% had received only psychosocial treatments; measurements indicated that just 11% of those receiving lithium treatments showed any improvement, and 57% of those using psychosocial interventions showed no
improvement (Keks, 2009). Clearly, the administration of proper, effective treatment can mean the difference between life and death. One major category of treatment for bipolar disorder in children and
adolescents is drug treatments. The administration of drugs can reduce the extremity of periods of mania and depression both such that the patient experiences a more "baseline" level of emotional
excitement over a prolonged period of time. The drug aripiprazole in particular has been shown to "significant reduce depressive symptoms early in treatment" but to hold no statistically significant advantage
