apparently well-adjusted relationship in the movie is between a nice clean-cut, homosexual couple who are both have the first name of "Jim." The film ends in tragedy with the
murder of the principal protagonist, which is Lester Burn ham (Kevin Spacey), but what if the arts of psychotherapy had been brought to the story before tensions reached this violent
level? The following discussion examines what might have happened had Burnhams murderer, Colonel Fitts (Chris Cooper), had the benefits of either personality-center therapy or cognitive therapy before the
credit rolled. However, before psychoanalyzing Col. Fitts, it is necessary to get an overview of the films plot in order to see Col. Fitts personality problems in context. Burnham,
who is saddled with a job that he abhors, also has a shrill wife, Carolyn (Annette Bening), whom he doesnt care for either, and a sullen teenage daughter, Jane (Thora
Birch). Colonel Fitts, the subject of this hypothetical psychotherapy, is Burnhams neighbor, and is retired. The colonel has an off-beat teenage son Ricky (Wes Bentley) and then theres the
two "Jims" (Scott Bakula and Sam Robards). Among its other themes, the movie is a cautionary tale about the ramifications of suppressed homosexuality. While the main story concerns
