are very few surprises along the way. His simplistic story would not please adults. Despite this, however, it does offer readers of the appropriate age valuable lessons in
the power of friendship; in the worth of never giving up; and in the idea that we can achieve whatever we want to, if we believe strongly enough in our
goal. These ideas are important for anyone. Discussion It must be said: Unless the reader loves basketball and knows enough about it to follow all the
strategy, the long descriptions of the games are a crashing bore, since Lupica goes into great detail about defensive and offensive techniques. But the games are really only background
for the main story: that of Danny Walker and how he overcomes his height (hes 12 years old and 55 inches tall) to lead his team to victory.
The first words in the story tell us the books main theme, which is that we can achieve anything we set out to do, if we believe we can do
it: "He knew he was small. He just didnt think he was small. Big difference" (Lupica, 2004, p. 1). The play on words ("small" and "big")
will appeal to a younger audience, and it tells us that Danny believes in himself. We know immediately that things are going to go well for him, even though
there will be setbacks along the way. Danny is our main character and the hero of the novel; it will be up to him to save the day, score
the winning basket, slay the dragon-whatever the final challenge is, Danny will overcome it. So the first theme of the book is "believe in yourself." Next we
