This 13 page paper examines the pros and cons of transracial adoption, specifically relating to African Americans and Hispanics. Furthermore, this paper examines the opposition of groups such as the National Black Social Workers who believe that such adoptions represent genocide of the balck race. Statistics are included in this report to illustrate the numbers of transracial adoptions, the number of minorities in foster care, etc. This paper takes an overall positive view of transracial adoption in its representation of both sides of the issue. the argument to a matter of personal opinion as opposed to substantive integrity. Within the African American community there is particular support for race-based adoptions, in order to preserve
the cultural experience that is so inherent to African American life. The white community is more divided on the issue, which in itself raises significant ideological concerns. The
end result is conflict regarding adoption that is neither easily solved nor easily ignored. There have historically been significant barriers to
trans-racial adoption. For instance, the National Black Social Workers have been vehemently against the adoption of blacks by white parents (Lane, 2004). Therefore, they lobbied strongly against The
Multiethnic Placement Act (MEPA) which passed Congress in 1994 (Lane, 2004). The purpose of MEPA was to remove many of the barriers that had existed to interethnic adoption (Lane,
2004). The National Black Social Workers contend that racial matching is extremely important for the long-term benefit of the child (Lane, 2004). They contend that a black child
raised by white parents would have many significant adjustment and social issues that would not be in the best interest of any of the parties (Lane, 2004).
In fact, within the African American community, there is a great deal of division on the issue of trans-racial adoption (Hollingsworth, 1999). There are
those who contend that such adoptions are at least providing the children with loving homes, but the majority of African Americans are against the practice on grounds of the racial
implications (Hollingsworth, 1999). In other words, many African Americans, including the outspoken National Black Social Workers, assert that the African American experience is a unique one in regards to
