at Newarks theory of semantic translation and then compare this to Nidas concepts of formal and dynamic equivalence models. Semantic translation, along with commutative translation were theories developed as
an alternative to the monistic theory where translation, in common with language, is a social phenomenon in order to address the audience of the speakers presence. This approach is argued
as correct as where translation take place is takes place with the presence of the dichotomies; the two cultures, native and foreign, the two languages and the two parities to
the creation of the translated text, the writer and the translator. Newark argues that with these dichotomies as well as the actual readership of the text, it is unlikely a
single theory could take all of these factors into account and that by recommending only one of several defined methods of translation which may all be somewhat lacking. Newark argues
that that when translation is undertaken it should be both semantic and communicative, just as it should be both individual and social, the bias is simply a matter of the
different emphasis. When looking at Semantic translation Newark begins by distinguishing this from the use of literal translation. The foundations of Newark are based on Nabokovs work where semantic
translation is where the translator seeks to produce translated text that is as close to the original semantic and syntactic structure as possible to give the exact contextual meaning and
the original text. This may be seen as very different from literal translation where it is the meaning of the words that are translated literarily, but with this there is
the potential for the context to be lost. There may be a clash between the way the words translate and the meaning of the words in that context, the translator
