Essay / Research Paper Abstract
5 pages in length. Transgenderism may initially commence as a biological error whereby an individual is born with one gender's physical attributes and the other gender's mental/emotional composition, however, the fundamental components of this aspect of sexual identity are based within a disorder of the psyche. Confused by what their gender is supposed to reflect, transgenderists are trapped between two very different worlds; if they are to assume one side or the other as their role representation, they deny a very significant portion of themselves with regard to their overall biological identity. To choose between masculine and feminine attributes is not as easy as merely applying a conscious choice; rather, the emotional and biological dictates are what ultimately determine the direction a person might follow. To remain strictly androgynous, however, is to invite social criticism and intolerance. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

This leads to the question: is being transgender a "mistake" of the mind or the body? Is it a mistake at all, or a sign that we, as a
culture, must stop insisting on only two genders? (Caplan, 2008). Classified in the 1980s as Gender-Identity Disorder by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) III, transgenderism has long been
described as a psychological problem due in great part to the manner by which children are raised. Boys who are effeminized and girls who are masculinized during their upbringing
were said to be trained toward transgender tendencies; indicating how environmental influences were a critical component to how the young mind processes gender identity, the attempt to assign a disorder
