focus on Canada, this is not a strictly Canadian issue. GLBT groups in such diverse countries as Brazil, Germany and the United States are all working to find a solution
to the problem of gendered bathrooms. The word "gendered" here means that bathrooms in almost all establishments are clearly marked MEN or WOMEN (or some variation thereof; one seafood restaurant
uses BUOYS and GULLS, unfortunately). This means that a person needs to make a decision about which bathroom to use, based upon their gender. For most of us this
is not an issue, because the vast majority of people self-identify as either male or female; they do not have any doubt about their gender. However, for a group of
people who are transgendered-often defined as not belonging to either sex-the decision of which bathroom to use is extremely important and sometimes difficult. Ones first instinct might be to laugh:
how important is this really? But a moments reflection reveals that the problem deserves serious consideration. Transgendered people are generally considered to be those "whose self-identified gender does not match
their physical gender" (Armstrong, 2006). The issues that such people face "on a daily basis are not issues people in the wider community confront" (Armstrong, 2006). Think, for a moment,
of a person who looks like a man but considers herself a woman; where does she go to use the bathroom? "Do you use the womens bathroom where you get
screamed at, or do you use the mens bathroom where you get the crap beaten out of you?" (Armstrong, 2006). A very good question indeed. Women in general, even those
