Some educational leaders are adopting transformational leadership principles to meet the needs. This essay compares research studies reported in two journal articles that investigated elements of transformational leadership and change. i. & ii. Titles and Authors Study #1. Transformational leadership and the implementation of large-scale innovation programs by Femke Geijsel, Peter Sleegers, and Rudolf van den Berg (1999). Study #2. Transformational leadership effects on teachers commitment and effort toward school reform by Femke Geijsel, Peter Sleegers, Kenneth Leithwood, and Doris Jantzi (2003). iii. Purpose of Each Study The purpose of the Femke et al. (2003) study was to determine if aspects of transformational school leadership had an impact on teachers willingness and commitment to changes and if so, which aspects or factors were most powerful. Included in the purpose was how Dutch and Canadian teachers may differ. The purpose of the earlier studies by Geijsel, Sleegers, and van den Berg (1999) was to investigate how transformational leadership helped large-scale innovative changes in schools in the Netherlands. iv. Why Study is important The Geijsel, Sleegers, and van den Berg (1999) was important because transformational leadership had been found to be effective in the private sector when the organization needed to make changes. New leadership styles were important to introduce into education. The study compared two countries, which allowed the researchers to make more generalized statements. The Geijsel et al.
