Rost, an expert on leadership theory at the University of San Francisco, points out that the vast majority of leadership models in the twentieth century were "management oriented" and focused "only on the leader," while also being "rationalistic, technocratic, linear, quantitative and scientific in language and methodology" (1993, p. 27). In contrast, transformational leadership is collaborative and concerned with the "common good, global concerns, diversity and pluralism in structures and participation (Rost, 1993, p. 181). As this suggests, transformational leadership provides a model for business that addresses the overall corporate climate of an organization. The transformational model has inspired the student researching this topic to formulate a personal theory of organizational leadership -- the BASIC theory. (The student researching this topic can, of course, phrase this in the first person in creating his/her own paper.) The element of this theory is --as the acronymic name suggests -- "being." This refers to the personal characteristics of the transformational leader and the manner in which the leader inspires ethical conduct. Transformational leadership not only provides a "vision" that motivates employees to achieve the extraordinary, but it also aligns individuals and systems to that there is an "integrity throughout the organization towards this vision" (Cacioppe, 1997, p. 335). Rost (1993) emphasizes the point that the transformational leadership model differs greatly from the coercive, punitive leadership theories of the past that were patterned after military models. Rosts theory, also, emphasizes that leadership is a process that involves all aspects of organizational activity. Rost (1993) appears to agree with the conclusions of Cacioppe (1997) that transactional leaders promote ethical conduct because they inspire followers to incorporate higher values in their business practices, as well as also enabling followers to gain new perspectives on old problems that, in turns, promotes putting in extras effort to ...
