assume that genius is simply a person who is incredibly intelligent and gifted; a genius. But, in Emersons essay it is more symbolic of something that is within every person,
something ethereal almost that seems to guide, and offer hope. The following paper examines whether Emerson actually believes that the transformation of genius into practical power is possible as seen
in his essay Experience. Transformation of Genius into Practical Power: Emerson In the beginning of his essay Emerson notes that, "But the Genius which, according to the old belief,
stands at the door by which we enter, and gives us the lethe to drink, that we may tell no tales, mixed the cup too strongly, and we cannot shake
off the lethargy now at noonday....Ah that our Genius were a little more of a genius!" In this excerpt the Genius is the power, the place, the identity of who
we are that somehow has become lost in the midst of society and living in a mundane world. At the same time, when he speaks of genius without capitalization
as a symbolic entity, he speaks of how humanity only uses their genius for a small amount of time. For example, he points to individuals who take an idea, an
idea genius and write on it. It is but one idea, one small part of their lives, and thus demonstrates that genius is so limited in the world, and in
the race of humanity. It is as though humans are too muddled in this world to truly take hold of the genius within them and thus make change take place.
It is not until the end of the work that Emerson states, "there is victory yet for all justice; and the true romance which the world exists to realize,
