Acme Packaging is an old packaging and printing company, one that relatively recently has determined to update its equipment and operations, "get in the game," and make the most
of its fine reputation in the packaging industry. Acme does some non-packaging printing on a contract basis, but the bulk of its revenues directly originate with contract package design
and production. Acme has suffered declining revenues over the past several years, and a consultants study determined that Acmes problems lay with costly
and outmoded equipment that was adequate in the past but no longer could meet the needs of the company (Pacific Southwest Container, 2001, p. 19). Acme has replaced much
of the old equipment with modern PC-based, digital versions (PC based control helps speed time-to-market 2001, p. 16; Larson 2001; p. 42). The equipment upgrade has been beneficial, but
the company finds it still needs to redesign its production processes in order to take full advantage of the benefits of the technology now available to it (Ducey 2001, p.
48). Transformation design has become a focus of Acme operations, both in concept as well as in product designs. The workforce has
been using the new equipment for a sufficient period of time that workers are now familiar with it and comfortable with its operation. Senior management and the production manager
agree that the company and its workers are in prime position to move forward into current state-of-the-art in the packaging and printing industry.
