cannot hope to be successful in transcultural communication or become culturally competent, for instance, if we dont understand our own cultural backgrounds. Examining ones own cultural beliefs, attitudes, values,
etc. will help an individual become aware of any stereotypes they may hold (Maier-Lorentz, 2008). A self-examination will lead to awareness of personal prejudices that could lead to a discriminatory
attitude when working with persons from certain cultures (Maier-Lorentz, 2008). Until one is fully aware of their own cultural backgrounds, an individual will not be open to learning about others
(Maier-Lorentz, 2008). One of the toughest parts of transcultural communication is nonverbal cues and yet, it is these very messages that are the most important in any communication interaction (Maier-Lorentz,
2008). As an example, Westerners are mostly trained to have eye contact with other people, it is a sign of attention and respect but direct eye contact in the Arab
world is often viewed as aggressive and impolite (Maier-Lorentz, 2008). Another example is touching, something that is common in the Western culture but that is not accepted in Arab cultures
(Maier-Lorentz, 2008). Male doctors, for instance, may not be allowed to touch female Arab patients in certain parts of the body and female nurses may not be allowed to touch
