the field of leadership was to distinguish between transactional and transformational leadership. There are some similarities between them and there are also significant differences. The characteristics associated with transactional leadership
include: working to establish goals and rewarding employees for accomplishing those goals; responsive to the needs and interests of employees and rewarding effort (Bryant, 2003). Burns said that transactional leadership
"requires a shrewd eye for opportunity, a good hand at bargaining, persuading, reciprocating" (p. 169). Transaction leaders live by certain values. These include honesty, fairness, integrity, and responsibility (Burns,
1978). This leader is also concerned about the exchange process, such as giving rewards for both effort and results. This would also include incentives for certain performance levels. These core
values guide and govern this leaders behaviors. The underlying assumptions in transactional leadership are that people are motivated by rewards, any work system will work based if there is
a clear line of authority and that when people agree to accept and do the job, they inherently agree to do what their manager tells them to do (ChangingMinds.org, 2008).
This sounds a bit like McGregors Theories X and Y but it isnt that rigid. Fairness and integrity are keys in this style. Transactional is categorized as an economic model
