of these traits is associated with action and it is by their parents actions that children know that they are loved and cherished, and it is love that provides the
foundation on which they will build their outlook toward life and their value system. However, feeling love is not enough to be a good parent, as good parenting is turning
love into meaningful action, which means demonstrating patience, guidance and setting boundaries. Patience is a central and crucial trait for good parenting and arguably the parental trait that is required
most often. It takes patience, and a considerable amount of endurance, to cope with a colicky infant. Colic is eventually outgrown, but the demands on patience are only beginning. Babies
and toddlers explore their world, learning such basic concepts as "empty" and "full." When a toddler pulls all the books off the bottom shelves of the bookcase or empties out
a drawer, that toddler is not being "bad" but rather is exploring how things work. It takes patience to allow a young child the freedom to learn, and patience is
also required in setting reasonable boundaries. It is also true that older children, particularly adolescents, require more patience, not less, than younger children, as they will test the boundaries established
by parental authority to the limit. In keeping children within those boundaries, it is important that they know why those boundaries are there, which is where guidance comes into play.
Guidance is another significant parenting trait that is used throughout childhood, but changes in nature as the child changes. A toddler cannot understand an explanation of why it is
important not to stick little fingers into an electrical outlet. However, the toddler can understand and learn that when an angry parent says "no," a particular action should never be
