College, n.d.). Allport presented a trait theory. Gordon Allport made great contributions to the field of personality psychology with his focus on the individual as well as on the
present instead of the past. In fact, Allport was the first theorist to focus on personality, which is why he is often referred to as the father of personality theory.
He believed psychoanalysis went too deep and behaviorism did not go deep enough (Boeree, 2006). He is a trait theorist as well as a dispositional theorist. Although he identified 18,000
trait names in a dictionary, Allport argued that personalities were comprised of 5 to 10 traits. He identified different levels of traits. Cardinal traits are those that dominate the individuals
personality drives, such as ambition. Central traits are a small number that that affect the persons behaviors, such as generosity. Secondary traits are those that are consistent but they are
not necessarily displayed. Individual traits are those the individual has that may not be shared by those around (Boeree, 2006; Westmont College, n.d.) Allport believed that what a person does
is directly related to what the person is. That is his individual psychology. People behave in ways that demonstrate their own selves. He referred to this as "propriate functioning" (Boeree,
2006). This word is derived from proprium, a word Allport coined for the self. This emerged because Allport was not satisfied with the many definitions of self (Boeree, 2006). He
