where a new employee is shown how to perform the tasks that are part f other job, or it maybe through a highly developed scheme that aids with personal and
professional development. Training is generally accepted as being able to add value to a firm, from basic scientific models such as that of Taylor where employees need to be trained
the best way to perform a task in order to create efficiency (Talylor, 1998) to the concept of the learning organization advocated by Peter Senge where there is a model
of constant learning and adaptation. One of the problems with the way that training takes place is often the attitude, where employers see it as a cost rather than
an investment, without appreciate the value that can be created, as well as the way that training may be implemented. In order for a firm, to gain the most from
their training programs, it is not only a question of having them in place, they need to meet the needs of the employer as well as have some benefit to
the employees. To consider training and development in this context and how it can add value it is important to look at different aspects of the subject. In this presentation
we will look at what is meant by training and development, outline how and why it is important and then look at the way that it can take place in
