Leadership skills are among the most important skills that are needed in the educational environment. Leadership is important from both a staff perspective and from a student perspective. Effectiveness as a teacher, for example, hinges on leadership. If a student is adequately prepared to fulfill their ultimate potential as a productive and functioning adult then they must leave the educational environment with certain leadership skills intact. The intent of this paper is to describe the types of educational programs that can enhance leadership skills. The first task at hand will be to review the content of a leadership seminar that was recently offered at a staff development conference. The final task, however, will be the presentation of more of a hands-on approach to leadership that can be developed into a lesson plan for a leadership program at my own institution. One of the more interesting facets of the leadership seminar delivered at a recent staff development conference was the detailed exploration of the concept of leadership, how it varies between individuals, and how certain influences can either positively or negatively impact it. The speaker emphasized that youth learn to be productive units of society through a variety of mechanisms. Society is the collective result of the interactions of individuals. It is a fascinating element of social interaction. Youth leaders and parents have the ability to mold a child into a product which society considers acceptable rather than leaving them to develop solely according to the values of their peers or adults with questionable social standing.
