a reader or viewer we watch and wait to see how they develop and how they emerge triumphant or defeated through their tragic position. The following paper examines three particular tragic plays. The plays are "Othello" by Shakespeare, "A Dolls House" by Ibsen, and "Oedipus the King" by Sophocles. Othello Othello is a tragic character because he is, first and foremost, and outsider to the realm in which he now lives. While he is royalty, he is not looked up very favorably by those around him, save his wife Desdemona. He is desperately in love with Desdemona but has a serious inferiority complex regarding her love of him and this is played on by Iago who ultimately destroys Othello. Unfortunately for Othello he listens to all the words of Iago. Everyone in the story knows that Iago lies, but they all somehow believe that he is honest with them as individuals. Othello falls into Iagos trap and believes that Desdemona is being unfaithful. Iago is out for revenge and will do whatever it takes to win Desdemona and a higher position in the court. Unfortunately Othello kills his wife because he does not believe her innocence and too late realizes his mistake. What makes Othello a likeable man is that he truly loves his wife and he is a noble and sensitive man. Unfortunately he has a weakness and that is his love of his wife. He doubts that she could possibly love him as much as he loves her. He is insecure and this insecurity allows us to truly see him as human, one of the most important elements when considering the audiences connection with a hero. If he were arrogant and unloving and conniving we would not care about his tragedy. A Dolls ...
