making the wrong decisions through ignorance, and generally presents us with almost every possible tragic reality. In the following paper we examine tragedy as it involves individuals, human cruelty
and suffering, family issues, and politics. Individuals It comes as no surprise to note that one of the most powerfully, if not the most powerfully, tragic individual is
King Lear himself. He is a man who is somewhat arrogant in his position as king, not an unheard of reality, and a man who is looking to the future.
He looks to the future through his three daughters, imagining that his favorite, the youngest, will respond as he desires. However, because she does not coddle him and essentially suck
up to him, giving him honesty instead, he dismisses her and becomes a tragic figure. He loses everything because of his ignorance. King Lears youngest daughter, Cordelia, suffers the most
as she is a truthful and loyal woman. She is completely dismissed by her father, yet she still succeeds in becoming a powerful woman as the Queen of France. However,
when she comes across her father once more, when he is mad and lost and truly a tragic figure, she does the right thing and stands by his side. However,
by standing at his side she suffers a fate she does not deserve. This makes her a very powerful tragic figure for she has done nothing but good. She has
been nothing but honest. And, because of her kindness, her love, her sympathy, and her honesty, she is killed. Another individual is Edgar, the Earl of Gloucesters legitimate son.
