another production of the play in order to further demonstrate how a successful staging of this play could be produced. Tragedy in "Death of a Salesman" In examining
and analyzing this particular play, as it relates to tragedy, it is perhaps first important to understand the classic definition of tragedy, as put forth centuries ago. A tragedy is
essentially a sad story of an individual who is liked by the audience. If the audience can relate to the character, feel for them, and see them as noble to
a great extent, then their story is tragic. A tragic hero also generally requires that a flaw be present in the individuals character, making them seem more human and approachable.
A story is not a tragedy if the audience does not care about the hero and a story is not a tragedy if the main character, the hero, has no
faults at all. In our modern society, and perhaps in the past century or so, a tragedy does not necessarily possess all those qualities. However, a tragedy must still
have a character that the audience can relate to and feel for, even if they dont particularly like the character. If something bad befalls an ordinary person, a person trying
