2001 properly! Introduction Psychotherapy has been defined by a number of people. For instance, Frank defined it as "a type
of social influence exerted by a trained and socially sanctioned healer on a person or persons who suffer and are seeking relief, through a series of defined contacts" (1973, p.
15). Butler and Strupp said it was the "systematic use of a human relationship for therapeutic purposes" (Brent and Kolko, 1998, p. 17). Brent and Kolko offered a more comprehensive
definition: Psychotherapy is a modality of treatment in which the therapist and patient(s) work together to ameliorate psychopathological conditions and functional impairment through focus on (1) the therapeutic relationship; (2)
the patients attitudes, thoughts, affect, and behavior; and (3) social context and development (1998, p. 17). The commonality among definitions is the fact that both the therapist and the patient
must work together towards reducing the effects of psychopathologies. There are numerous models of psychotherapy that have been tried and tested over the past hundred years. There are
also numerous models that are in practice but which have no empirical evidence to support the technique(s) being used. This essay discusses what we will call traditional models first, then
will discuss those models lacking empirical evidence of validity. The latter are referred to as fringe therapies, although some authors have referred to them as crazy therapies. The essay also
