cultures have had a difficult time acculturating into the dominant White Anglo Saxon culture of the United States for a number of reasons. Five particular reasons, however, stand out.
These are: 1. continued sensitivity to the past wrongs inflicted on Native America by mainstream American, 2. the differences between these cultures that occur in
regard to their respective relationships with the land and other natural resources, 3. differences in the way these cultures religiosity and relationship with their Creator, 4. differences
in aesthetics and desire in regard to material possessions, and 5. the continued desire on the part of traditional Native American cultures to control their lives and their lands
without interference from those outside. The historical relationship between mainstream American and traditional Native America has been rocky to say the least.
There were many wrongs inflicted in the past that make it difficult for traditional Native America to become one with mainstream America. How can one trust a people that
attempted genocide on ones ancestors? How can a traditional peoples whose entire lifeways was tied to their land and natural resources one ever identify with a people that took
those lands and resources and essentially annihilated them? Past wrongs such as these have resulted in a continued distrust between traditional Native America and mainstream American. As of
yet, time has not been the salve to heal the many gaping wounds that history has left. The differences that exist between
