appears to have the desired personal characteristics and responds appropriately (or as expected) to the questions, then the person is judged qualified for the job. The problem is that
if you screened your applicants properly, you should only be interviewing people who are on the surface "qualified" to do the job, thus the interview process needs to dig deeper
and determine if the person will do the job well (Podmoroff, 2004, p. 65). Traditional interviewing has historically relied upon the vastness
of open-ended questioning rather than pinpointing specifics with close-ended inquiry. While the amount of information obtained from open-ended questions is extensive, this does not automatically equate it with being
valuable from the aspect of accurate response. Utilizing open-ended questions provides for the applicant to freely flow with thoughts and opinions, however, this very element can detract from both
the validity and accuracy where answers are concerned, inasmuch as they can be convoluted, misunderstood, ambiguous or off topic. Close-ended questions, by comparison, serve to rein in these undesirable
