Introduction W. Somerset Maugham once stated that "Tradition is a guide and not a jailor" (Gillespie; Becker, 2007; 279). Tradition is something that many people live with, or live by.
For example, celebrating Christmas is a tradition for many people. But, in some cases people are perhaps trapped by their traditions. Sometimes it is necessary to change traditions to improve
society or an individuals life. The following paper examines the meaning of Maughams quote. Tradition is a Guide and Not a Jailor A person can look all around
them and see traditions in their culture, their community, their family, and also in the cultures or communities of others. For example, a person may take part in a tradition
of throwing a big party for their children at the end of the school year, inviting the entire neighborhood. Such a tradition is clearly not something that can be seen
as a jailor for it is not really trapping anyone or restricting people. For the most part it could be argued that individual traditions, such as a party, are not
oppressive and thus not something that reflect the notion of tradition being a jailor. They are guides to improving ones life and the life of ones family or community. When
