of Curtin look at cross cultural trade and include the idea of trade diaspora where merchants moved form native lands and created new networks of trade, they would not necessarily
assimilate themselves into the local environment, indeed, in colonisation we see the opposite occur as the merchants and others who move to new land seek to enforce and transfer their
own values and systems. However there is an exchange and trading takes place, this in turn is the stimuli for change. The work of Curtin (1984) looks mainly at Africa,
but the ideas are universal and the phenomenon he describes can be seen in many areas, if we look at England, up to the eighteenth century there are many examples
of change being stimulated by cross cultural trade. The first example we can look at is the industrial revolution and the trade in cotton, this may appear to be
a rather extreme and unlikely claim, the development for much of the industrial revolution have no direct ties to cultural ties, but we can argue there were some major influences
and drives that shaped the industrial revolution and the development of the cotton gin. The actual beginning of the industrial revolution is
hard to pin point exactly. Most historians agree that it began in England, with a series of different technological achievements (Hooker, 2001). The main aspect that is well known
