Unions serve a number of purposes. The primary purpose, however, is to act as a buffer between labor and the governmental and private entities that might take advantage of
that labor. Consequently, trade and labor unions are intimately tied together in both their purpose and their role in world trade. Trade and labor unions work to insure
sufficient and equitable pay and safe and humane working conditions. In addition they work to secure fair pricing of products. The European Trade Union provides a particularly interesting
example of the importance of trade and labor unions and the close interrelationship which exists between them and the governments and occupations they serve as does the European Trade Union.
The European Trade Union has had many effects in Europe as well as the rest of the world. John Shenefield in "A
Bad Idea on Paper" focuses on the effects of competition in the United Kingdom. He provides a particular emphasis on the Competition Bill presented to the UK parliament in
1998. It is a bill which was designed to bring British rules into step with Articles 85 and 86 of the European Union Treaty. The Competition Bill is
intended to clarify the numerous ineffective laws currently on British Books and is hoped to result in the enhancement of competitive forces, the lowering of prices and an increase in
customer satisfaction. It quickly becomes apparent when reviewing trade unions such as the ETU that there is a close interrelationship between union purpose,
policy, occupational makeup and governments. Starting with the discussions in the 1950s about restructuring the economies of Western Europe, two alternatives for economic co-operation emerged (Hosli and Saether, 1997).
