some instances where the countries have closer ties, and changes in one country will impact directly on the other. This was the case in colonial times, and is still the
case for many colonies or territories. In looking at trade relations between France and French Guyana, also referred to as French Guiana, the understanding must begin with a brief history
of the relationship and how it has developed to the current scenario. The history of the relationship between France and French Guiana goes back four hundred years, when the
French settled the area in 1604. This was, at the time, and still is, a wilderness, mostly unsettled situated in South America. South America was a volatile region during the
colonial period, there were many who entered the area seeking to gain riches, as a result between 1654 and 1915 there have been numerous changes in the nation who had
control of the area (CIA, 2003). The influences left by the British, Brazilian, Dutch and Portuguese can still be seen in the culture (CIA, 2003). There have also
been numerous disputes over boarders with Brazil to the south and east and Suriname to the west. It was in 1946 that French Guiana gained the current status as
an overseas department of France, known as a D?partement doutre-mer (DOM). The areas trade at this time was mostly in the form of the holding of prisoners, known as Devils
