Toyota Corporation has continued to excel in the auto industry and now enjoys a large portion of the global market. Apparently, General Motors could learn a thing or two
from Toyota, but are they willing to do so. There are differences in culture and history between the two countries, but the ideas of human resource management, supply chain
management and the philosophy of production that has led to Toyotas great success could be instituted in the United States. However, it appears that General Motors first is taking some
preemptive measures to try to get back on track, by laying off employees, shutting down plants, cutting back on production and diminishing many employees benefits. It does not appear
that General Motors has a long range goal for improvement nor any idea how to turn their company around and prepare for success in the future. THE STORY OF GENERAL
MOTORS It appears to be the perception at General Motors that it is prohibitively expensive to produce a quality product and that any company who goes through the effort and
cost to product a quality product will eventually lose customer to their competitors who product the same or similar product at a cheaper price (Tandra, 2006). General Motors not
only has failed to product a quality product, but they have failed in their long range goals and plans to keep their company from having to undergo significant cut backs
just to stay afloat. Detroit and in particular, General Motors was noted as the home of one of the best automobile manufacturers in the world. However, it was
