including those with AIDS. In understanding the changing views on this disease, it is necessary to relate the pathophysiological developments and the etiology of the infection. This does
not mean that the impacts of congenital toxoplasmosis should not also be assessed and related, but instead that this does not create a full picture of the issue of T
gondii infection, or toxoplasmosis. T gondii infection, or toxoplasmosis, is a global infection rather than a disease, that was once considered primarily an infection that occurred during
pregnancy and impacted the unborn or newborn child (Djurkovic-Djakovic, 2002). In recent years, though, the call for an understanding of the impact of toxoplasmosis infection on individual with suppressed
immunity has brought this disease into the forefront of modern studies (Djurkovic-Djakovic, 2002). In fact, toxoplasmosis has been recognized as a "major cause of opportunistic infection in immunosuppression
induced by, but not limited to, HIV. The same period also saw a breakthrough in immunological and genetic tools to dissect the organism, which enabled better insight into the complex
host-parasite relationship that make T gondii one of the most successful parasites on earth" (Djurkovic-Djakovic, 2002, p. 363). Acute infections in pregnant women can cause severe problems for
newborn childrne, including mental retardation, blindness and epilepsy (Lopez, 2000). "An estimated 400-4,000 cases of congenital toxoplasmosis occur each year in the United States. Of the 750 deaths attributed
to toxoplasmosis each year, 375 (50%) are believed to be caused by eating contaminated meat, making toxoplasmosis the third leading cause of foodborne deaths in this country" (Lopez, 2000).
The etiological factors for toxoplasmosis infection occur through one of three basic routes: "a) ingestion of raw or inadequately cooked infected meat; b) ingestion of oocysts, an environmentally
