Ivey also outlines the skills necessary to be an effective provider and in relating a goal-based approach. For example, it
is Iveys contention that counseling is a more personal process than interviewing, though interviewing may be used as a part of counseling. Psychotherapy, as compared to counseling or interviewing,
is a more intense process but is based on many of the same skills. Ivey goes on to outline these skills in what is described as the "microskills hierarchy"
which reflect different methods to learn about a client that focus on the clients story as a part of the therapeutic or helping process (Griffin, 2003).
Iveys first chapter provides foundational information that can be utilized by those learning the practices of intentional interviewing and counseling. The author reflects the need
for microskill development and proposes the use of methods to practice these skills as a part of the learning process. Rather than simply reading the list of microskills needed,
including things like focusing, reflecting, and observing, Ivey clearly maintains the value in practicing the skills by evaluating specific client stories or client scenarios in relation to the skills.
