In 2001, for example, many of the tourists who would have gone to Zimbabwe went to Zambia, the neighboring country, which is less developed, but provides a greater level of protection and safety for visitors (Machipisa, 2001). In 2006 and 2007, researchers maintained that Zimbabwe experienced another upward spike in tourism (Ankomah, 2007). In a country were jobs are limited and economic growth is impacted by political processes, the fluctuations in an industry like tourism have a major impact on employment and economic stability. This paper will focus on the current views in Zimbabwe regarding the nature of tourism and the tourist market, while also considering potential factors that hinder the continuation of the tourism industry in this country. Growth and Distribution of Tourism In an industry that had demonstrated widespread growth of 20 to 40 percent since 1980, the declining levels in 2001 left many people unemployed (Machipisa, 2001). Estimates suggest that declining numbers between 1999 and 2001 lead to a loss of some 5,000 jobs, with major tour operators, hotels and tourism expansion programs closing down (Machipisa, 2001). This has limited the exposure of tourists to the major tourist attractions in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe had a number of tourist attractions, especially natural attractions in the countries national parks (Painter, 2006). Domboshawa National Park north of Harare has been noted for its many ancient rock paintings, while Victoria Falls is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world (Cogswell, 2005; Rogers, 2007).
