Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 6 page description of the physical manifestations of Tourette’s Syndrome and an investigation of the physiological reasons behind the condition. The condition is one with neurological, psychopathological, biochemical, and genetic aspects. In particular, it appears to be genetically linked with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD). As such, it has a number of connotations in the education arena as to how individuals suffering with the condition should be handled to increase their educational accomplishments. Behavioral modification is one of the most successful interventions in this environment. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

la Tourette (Murray, 1997). The condition is one with neurological, psychopathological, biochemical, and genetic aspects. In particular, it appears to be genetically linked with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
and attention deficit disorder (Murray, 1997). As such, it has a number of connotations in the education arena as to how individuals suffering with the condition should be handled
to increase their educational accomplishments. Behavioral modification is one of the most successful interventions in this environment. Typically, the onset of Tourettes
Syndrome occurs between ages two and twenty-one (Murray, 1997). Symptoms include a variety of motor and vocal tics which can occur numerous times in a day at unpredictable frequency,
severity, and complexity (Murray, 1997). This variance is better understood when we speculate on the relation of neuronal firing frequencies, frequencies which vary in accordance with a number
of both external and internal stimuli (Anthony and Thibodeau, 1983). Differences in the neuronal firing characteristics differ significantly between times of
wakefulness and times of sleep (Anthony and Thibodeau, 1983). Events which occur around an individual cause the regular firing characteristics to be interlaced with short bursts of
action potentials (Anthony and Thibodeau, 1983). Because Tourettes Syndrome is believed to be associated with neuronal problems, it can be speculated that there is a relationship between neuronal firing
and the occurrence of tics. The most common symptom of Tourettes Syndrome is eye blinking but this symptom is accompanied by such motor
movements as "licking, spitting, hitting, jumping, smelling, and squatting" (Murray, 1997). Vocal tics include sounds ranging from barks and grunts to unpredictable shouts caused by tics in the muscles
