Totonno Pero began to make pizza, something that culminated in the opening of his own business in 1924 ("Totonnos - Reviews," 2007). This business "is the oldest continuously operating pizzeria in the U.S. run by the same family" ("Totonnos - Reviews," 2007). The restaurant has been popularized, but some claim that there is too much hype and that the business does not offer the best pizza in Brooklyn as some claim. Yet, others rave about the pizza slices at this well known establishment. Also, while one reviewer claims that the pizza is "classic," the author noted that it is an out of the way place and that the ambiance and service is less than stellar ("Totonnos Pizza," 2007). In one restaurant guide, it received a 93% rating for people who reported liking the food ("11224.net," 2007). This business does do something different than the average pizza restaurant in the New York metropolitan area. The business has always used fresh ingredients, and this is something that seems to attract customers. The dough and mozzarella cheese are made by hand and the tomatoes come from Italy ("Totonnos - Reviews," 2007). While the business attracts many families, tourists and residents, it is prudent to understand the Brooklyn demographics. A student observing this restaurant may note that many people from different walks of life eat there. Because Coney Island attracts tourists, or at least people who do not live in the general area, the type of customer will vary. At the same time, Coney Island is a place that many Brooklynites frequent. This is why Brooklyn demographics are so important.
