Total rewards-based programs are based on a number of types of compensation elements and benefits that employees receive from their employers. Total rewards relate to all of the ways that an employer shows acknowledgement for employee efforts, including those elements that are used for attracting, motivating and retaining employees (WorldatWork, 2006). Generally speaking, total rewards can be broken down into five distinct components: * Compensation * Benefits * Work-Life * Performance and Recognition * Development and Career Opportunities (WorldatWork, 2006). Though cash compensation appears to be the most commonly recognized method of attracting employees, Manas and Graham (2002) argue that "noncash rewards are the components of the employment compact, or employer/employee relationship, that matter most to todays workforce. People do not leave jobs for money--they leave jobs for opportunity" (p. 3). Total rewards, then, defines compensation as just one five parts of the rewards of working in a particular employment situation. Human resources managers have struggled with efforts to improve performance in the workplace setting. It has readily been recognized that improving performance outcomes is not generally a product of implementing performance appraisals or punitive efforts to determine increases in employee outcomes. Instead, evidence suggests that improvements in job satisfaction is directly correlated to improvements in employee performance. Employee satisfaction, though, is a complex issue. A number of different types of human resource management systems have been put into place in an effort to improve employee satisfaction, including shorter work days, shorter work weeks, and improvements in compensation packages.
